Nev March‘s review

Meticulously researched and delightfully balanced with narrative and action. An astonishing feat.
The mid sixteenth century was fraught with complex alliances in Europe. Following Catholic English courtier Edward Latham’s adventures through different places and discoveries was a delight. I must admit the delicacies and intricacies of Spanish, French, Dutch politics left me somewhat dazed. Yet Goldberg kept me enthralled with both the wider political game and Latham tribulations as he works out the truth in small anomalies that point to greater secrets. Brilliant plotting and a splendid cast of characters.
Goldberg also shares delightful “slinky” politics of the first Queen Elizabeth and the Catholic Protestant schism with astonishing dexterity and a balanced perspective.
Most of all I enjoyed Latham’s slow questioning of spiritual certainties that are still relevant in todays world. I would certainly read anything Goldberg writes.
